BookMyShow removed all content linked to comedian Kunal Kamra on Saturday, delisting him from its artist roster. This followed a request by Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), who objected to Kamra’s remarks about Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.
The decision is being seen as a significant blow to the comedian’s professional visibility, especially as BookMyShow is a major platform for stand-up bookings across India.
Shiv Sena youth leader Rahool N Kanal welcomed the removal. In a letter, he argued that allowing Kamra to perform could be interpreted as “endorsing divisive rhetoric,” which may “incite public mischief and disrupt social harmony.”
He added that BookMyShow has a responsibility, especially being headquartered in Mumbai, to uphold sentiments of its diverse audience.
Kamra has been summoned thrice by Mumbai Police over an FIR for defamation and promoting public mischief. Recently, officers visited his residence for a response regarding his appearance.
Amid death threats exceeding 500 calls, Kamra returned to Tamil Nadu and has secured interim protection from arrest via the Madras High Court.
Referencing an article by India Today, Kamra tweeted to BookMyShow, asking: “Hello BookMyShow, can you please confirm if I have your platform to list my shows? If not, it's fine. I understand.”
The tweet reflects a tone of resignation amid growing public and political pressure.
This development signals increasing scrutiny of public figures in India's entertainment space. As platforms like BookMyShow navigate political sensitivity and user sentiment, the Kamra case may set a precedent for content moderation in live performances.
